Report Server Email Question

Report Server Email Delivery setup

I have Report Server setup and I want to add email delivery functionality.
According to Books Online, to configure a Report Server for email delivery
only the following is necessary in RSReportServer.config:
1) SMTPServer - Note I entered just the mail/smtp server host name, not
fully qualified, not a UNC name...just the servername (i.e: Server1). The
values section of the help info says the entry can be "an ip address, a DNS
resolvable name or the name of the computer hosting the SMTP service. I chose
the latter.
2) SMTPAccountName
I added both the above settings, but under "New Subscription" only "Report
Server file share" shows up under "Delivered By". I restarted the Report mgr
service and iisreset.
What's missing?Under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting
Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config
<Extension Name="Report Server Email" ... >
<Configuration>
<RSEmailDPConfiguration>
<From>Type and Email ID Here</From>
Once you add some email id over here which is from email then you will be
able to see the Email Delivery option

Report Server doesn't install

Hi!!
I'm trying to install SQL Report Services on my mahicne. I get the designer
installed, as well as other tools, but the Report Server doesn't get
installed, and I can't open or deploy any report. I have WXP Pro, S2K SP4, RS
Dev Edition SP1, and using my admin account.
The "ReportServer" or "Reports" virtual forlders on IIS doesn't exist after
installation, nor does the "ReportServer" folder under the SQL Server
harddisk folders.
Anyone has experimented the same problem? Any help is really appreciated!
Many thanks in advance!!!
MNBusually there is a log at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\RS Setup Bootstrap\Log
Do you have any error during installation? Did it say succesful? Is there
any thing failed in the log?

create ny ReportServer or ReportServerTempDB on my SQL Server. I'm using
mixed authentication on the SQL installation.
Don't know what else I can do! The LOG file doesn't show errors at first
glace.. but it's huge, I should give it a deeper look. Any help on where to
look?
Many thanks!

Report server does not initialize

I am using ms sql 2005 standard edition on windows Nt

Everything is working fine except the report server..

when i run the configuration tool and try to start the report server, it fails to start.. i am using sql on the local machine .

i have set p lmy database on the windows credentials..

i am using my machine name/user name as the account name for the database setup.

i have also used rsconfig utility to configure the report server but nothing happens after that..

pls help

SQL Server 2005 introduces a new inteface for configuring the report server. It is located under Programs --> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 --> Configuration Tools --> Reporting Services Configuration. YOu can reinitialize your report also from here with the graphical UI. If that doens′t solve the problem, try to get the error messages fromt he log directory and the event log to see what is going on behind the scenes.

Hi

Thanks Jens

I did manage to start my report server.But when i try to build reports in Business intelligence, i get an error saying "out of memory exception".

Everything seems to be running fine in the configuration manager..i even tried to run the service pack 1 but it doesnt work. i get an error which says " setup is not able to access sql with the login details.

I have checked the login details as well.... both RS and SQL server use windows credentials

Please help..what do i do?

|||

That sounds strange. Are you getting the errors while deploying the reports on the server or during the creation of a Reporting Services project ? Although it could be that there is a problem within your SQL Server (you might check the event logs for abnormalities) there is sure a problem with your client if the error occurs during the creation of the reports. Before finding the needle in the hay, deinstall the tools / client components and reinstall them. Afterwards apply Service Pack 1 and the post hotfixes that you will have the current built of 2153. Let see if that helps.

i have checked the error log and everything seems to be running fine. i have done the reistallation but it still it does not help. i applied the service pack 1 but it does not run properly. it gives me the error " setup cannot access the sql server with the login deails".. i have checked the logins as well. i am using windows credentials for both sql server and report server. please help me as our entire business is developing report and sending it to our clients...

Report Server direct connect from ASP.NET application

OK, I am not a programmer, but administrate the Report Server and its security. The .NET programmers want to connect direct to Report Server using WEB.CONFIG settings (see below).

<appSettings>
<add key="ConnectionString" value="Server=bpatlqddw\atlqddw01;Database=MP2_NET_STAGE;Integrated Security=False;User ID=MP2_Net;Password=xxxxx;Persist Security Info=false"/>

<add key="LogPath" value="\\bpga030wde01\wwwroot$\MP2_Net\Logs"/>
<add key="Url" value="http://bpga030wde01/MP2_Net/" />

What do I need to do to ensure their dynamic reports can run against my Report Server? What kind of rights do I assign the "MP2_Net" (above) login? All of this is outside the IIS-Report Server security environment? Do I assign rights via SQL Mgr? I cannot find any doco on this process.

What are the .NET programmers trying to do exactly? What is database MP2_NET_Stage? When you install reporting services and point it to a database it creates two databases, ReportServer and ReportServerTemp. Are they needing to access one of these?

|||

ASP.NET application. MP2_NET & MP2_NET_Stage are the maintenance system databases (development at this time). They are using Report Server to build forms used by users, like work orders, PO's, etc. They are programically calling RS engine instead of using reports RDLs on web root.

I guess the question is: Can ASP.NET connect to Report Server using SQL Login instead of Windows Auth. via IIS layer? If so, is the WEB.CONFIG sample in above the way to go, and what are the options in script to accomplish. And, what do I need to do as DBA to get SQL security setup to allow it to work?

(sorry for misspells)

Report Server Database Set Up

i am trying to set up report server on the Standard edition of Sql Server 2005 using winxp.. i generated the script to create the ReportServer/ReportServerTempDB database but when i try to specify a database connection and click apply this message is displayed

Verify Database Edition

The Feature: "Using other editions of sql server for report datasources and/or the report server database" is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services.

i can't i can figure out how to get around this i mean i can configure everything else from the virtual directory but not the Database Setup..What SKU of SQL Server did you install and what SKU of SSRS are you trying to install. This error is thrown when those two don't match.|||yeah i see i have the developer version installed and i installed report server from the standard edition How can i uninstall the report server?|||You should be able to use add/remove programs to get it uninstalled.

Report server database security question

I am currently the only Reportbuilder / Contentmanager / Publisher and admin in the Report server database. I am using windows authentication when creating subscriptions and saving them in this database. Some of the reports that i create have very sencitive information. What risks and procautions do i need to assess if i want to add another reportbuilder / content manager that can manage subscriptions? The main thing is I do not want the other builder and content manager to see my report information. is it just meta data that it holds or do i need to worrie about the data also? if so what do others do to block them from viewing other peoples data?

Summery : I just want them to see data that is relevent to their work and not mine. Is this even an issue? I know it will save query results if i do a snapshot.

I read something concering this in Brian Larson's Reporting Services 2005 book

I think basically you're stuck with Windows Authentication if you want everyone to see only their own stuff (and control their permissions in SQL server)

Ours have shared data source with one account into SQL Server, security is only at the RS folder level

but the situation is different than yours as in our environment, everyone sees the same thing (e.g. all managers see one report)

|||

Thanks, hopefully i can gather some more info on this. It seems to me that this is not an uncommon need with reporting services.

Brian

|||Hi,
There are probably different layers of access control here.
For starters, you have to use stored procedures to generate the report data and not use cache and filters. This way, your SP can check the user credential at runtime and deliver only the parameters values and the slice of data this user is allowed to access. Always pass the userid as sp parameter.
This is on the top of the ReportManager folder security.
To achieve this you will probably want to use only Windows group membership info, no SQL Server logins. yo have to either query LDAP/AD or maintain a local table of groups, users and group membership.
you would also have to create a couple SQL server application accounts, one for each report builder, then I think you can control access to various schema's so another report builder cannot see tables in your confidential schema (or database).
As far as subscriptions are concerned I believe that only meta data is stored in the ReportServer database. Unless your metadata is confidential, I do not think you have to care about this. you may just want to make sure one cannot create subscriptions for someone else and make sure no subscriptions will ever be sent to expired accounts.
You may also want to explore the config files to see what options you have as limiting access to subscriptions and access to domains.
This is not a very precise answer however your question is broad, so I cannot do better than giving hints.
Philippe|||

Do you know if actual data is kept in the Report server database ? I know snap shots are and from what I understand they would have data in them but other than that do you know if any quried data would be kept in there. I am not conserned with others seeing meta data for the report so at least that is not an issue.

Report Server Database is not supported on the edition of SQL Server 2000 you have chosen

Hello,
I am reviewing SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services for my company.
I have purchased the book "Hitchhikers Guide to SQL Server 2000 Reporting

Personal Edition.
The next thing I tried was Workgroup Edition on WinXP. Even the Workgroup
Edition did not work. I am downloading Developer Edition right now.
My target production machine is to use RS on a Windows XP Pro workstation.
My understanding is that for production version, there are only 3 SQL Server
Options: Entreprise, Standard and Workgroup. For Win XP, the only version
we can deploy is WorkGroup, the other 2 versions require a "server" machine.
Can SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services be deployed on a Win XP Pro with SQL
Server Workgroup SP4? I was unsuccessful at getting that to install but
perhaps I am not installing something properly...any help?
Thanks,
Dan

Report Server Database Documentation

Hail to all the serious Report Server users. Let us all start the documentation effort on Report Server Database (Reporting Services 2005). This will let us work around many problems that occur due to lask of documentation of the RS DB Schema.

Example :

    Subscriptions table in the report server database can be used for handling the subscriptions manually. A DML statement coupled with the same on the sysjobs in msdb database can stop corrupt subscriptions (which cannot be modified directly using User Interfaces)

Current Problem

    The problem that I am facing is related to the size of the Report Server (it is above 35 GBs, with 422 users) while its counter part with 128 users is only 4 GBs. This is due to a table ServerParametersInstance which is growing in an out-of-bound fashion. The lack of documentation is hurting.

So let us put in some effort & document the RS Database for good.

Any help is greatly appreciated...

Labyrinth

I'm also finding a growth problem. My test ReportServer database grew to 28GB in just 4 months of light use (one user, 10 queries per week). I traced it to the ServerParametersInstance table which had millions of rows, most or all with a Path to a data model I haven't used in months. Create and Modified Dates show some rows as far back as Feb, some this week. I don't know what's adding them.

I deleted the data model and will be deleting associated rows (where Path = 'Old Model').

I can't find documentation on what maintains this table, but the CleanExpiredServerParameters goes by ExpireDate. All of the expire dates were 180 days from create date. Is there a setting that I missed?

Report Server database advice

Hi,
is there likely to be any problem with us adding our own custom tables and
stored procedures to the report server database?
We will not be modifying any of the existing objects. Our objects are just
to add some of our own functionality.
thanks
MattI have tried it once.
Didnt have any problems with that!

into is if an upgrade of RS uses a table or SP with the same name. If you
make your names unique enough, there should be no issues.

If I need to move the ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB database to

Report Server Database

I forgot where I installed my Report Server Database! Reporting Services is
working fine but I just want to make sure we are backing up the database.
Help!The database(s) for SQLRS are usually stored in the local SQL instance,
unless you tried to specify elsewhere that is.

REPORT SERVER COULD NOT FOUND http:\\localhost ?

Hi Gurus;

How can Start Report Server At my local Machine

I installed Reporting Services and Reporting Services SP2, Sql Server 2000 and Sql Server 2004 SP4 ,IIS and VS.net 2003 and 2005.

And Another Question ?f you not busy :)

How can show my report in my programs ?

Your report server can be reached with this url

http://localhost/reports

If you want to put reports on your apllications the easies way is to use the reportviewer, its a free control that you can download for visual studio .net 2003 and its included on the toolbox on visual studio 2005.

There are many ways more to render but thats the easier to start.

|||

thanks for your reply .

but ? cant work report server so http://localhost/reports doesn't consist on my machine and it is not appear Services(Local).

My first problem this is. How I can make Report Server works in my machine?

|||

welll your english a little difficult to understand.

1. Did u already install it?

2. It seems that you installed sql server without reporting services because there is no service on the service manager.

Install it again.

Report Server connecting to another SQL Server

Our report server works if connecting to databases in the same SQL Server
instance. However, if I try to connect to a database of another SQL Server,
it does not work. The authentication fails.
We are using our custom data extension and use web service to connect. Do
you know what else we can do? We know that report server runs under the
NetworkService account. Can we change that?
Thanks in advance!Hi,
Welcome to use MSDN Managed Newsgroup!
Would you please clarify more clearly about how do you connect to the
database of another SQL Server? Would you please let me know your detailed
steps to connect another SQL Server and the detailed error message?
>> We know that report server runs under the
>> NetworkService account. Can we change that?
Of course you could. Change the startup account to domain account or local
system. I will recommand you change it to a domain account that also has
the administrator privilege on local machine.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation. If you have any questions or
concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. We are always here to be of
assistance!

We use our custom data extension to connect to SQL Server via our MiddleTier
using web service (given a url). Basically, when it gets to our MiddleTier,
the request is from NetworkService instead of the current user.
NetworkService fails the authentication process.

This is what we have attempted:
(1) Looked for the ReportServer application pool in IIS Manager
(2) In ReportServer properties, switched to the Identity tab
(3) Changed it from using the predefined 'Network Service' account to
configurable and specify a local administrator account
(4) Ran a report in Report Manager
(5) Got the following error "The Report Server Web Service is unable to
access secure information in the report server. Please verify that the
WebServiceAccount is specified correctly in the report server config file.
(rsAccessDeniedToSecureData) Get Online Help"
(6) Modified the report server config file to change the value of the
WebServiceAccount
(7) Ran the same report in Report Manager
(8) Didn't get the above error this time BUT still failed to access our
MiddleTier
When a user runs a report, we want that user identity to reach our
MiddleTier, NOT a special local admin account or NetworkService. The major
reason is that we want to be able to filter the data based on the user
identity.
When we ran the same report from within Report Designer, it worked
perfectly. The reason was that it was the right user identity that reached
our Middle Tier.
Please let us know what else we could do. Thanks!!

Report Server Configuration Manager 100% CPU

SQL2K8 July CTP. After installing and selecting self-configure option openned RS Configuration Manager UI and selected Instance. Report Server Status page appears ok. 10.0.1049.14 in native mode.

Is this a known bug?

We are still working out some bugs in LH support and expect this to be supported in the next CTP.

Report Server Configuration Issues!

I am attemping to configure Reporting Services on my fresh SQL Server 2005 install. I am literally setting all the defaults for the virtual dirs, identities etc. But when I get to Database Setup, I again pick the defaults, and click New.

It creates the DBs fine, but then asks me whether I want to upgrade the DB, which I find amazing seeing as this is a fresh install.

If I click No and move onto Initialization, then the app tells me there was an error switching panels, and says:

The version of the report server database is either in a format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. The found version is 'Unknown'. The expected version is 'C.0.8.40'. To continue, update the report server database and verify access rights. (rsInvalidReportServerDatabase).

If I click Yes, it attempts to update the database (that it just created!), and bombs out with the following error:

ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.WMIProviderException: The version does not match a supported version.

at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.GenerateDatabaseUpgradeScript(String databaseName, String serverVersion, String& script)

Does anybody have any ideas on this one? It seems like a authentication issue, but surely if it created the database, it should then have given itself some rights to use it!

This has been driving me up the wall, so all help is very much appreciated :)

I get the same behaviour!? (Upgrade from SQLServer 2000 -> 2005, then installed ReportServer)

Any fixes/solutions yet?

report server compatability issues

Hello!

I have sql server 2000(sp2) rs installed on one of my mashine and I am using VS,NET 2005 to develop some reports.

At the deploing step I am getting some error:

"Connection could not be made to the report server http://..."

Additional information on error message says:

"The attempt to connect to report server failed.Check your connection information and that report server is a compatible version. (Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer)."

Can't find any information about this issue. Is there anything I have to do to fix this.

Reports made in VS2005 are not compatible with the 2000 version of Reporting Services. You will need RS2005 to work with VS2005 reports.

report server cannot be initialized

Hi!
I have a problem while i want to test the status of the report server in my
win xp os:
-my os is win xp professional + sp2
-first i installed iis
-then i installed sql server 2005 standard edition
but when i want to initialize reporting service (using configure report
server page) , the "initialized "
option is disabled, and when i type http://localhost/reportserver in IE, IE
changes the address to a search keyword and
doesn't display report server page.
please, give me a solution for this!
thanks!Verify your web server is running and make sure you have asp.net installed,
run %WINNT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\%framework version%\aspnet_regiis.exe -i.
Open IIS console and verify that the virtual directory reportserver and
reports exist, browse the default the root of the reprtserver virtual from
IIS. Did you change the default virtual directory during the install..?

Report Server Authentication through Internet

We're trying to determine the best way to implement an authentication mechanism for our reporting services solution. Basically, we are exposing a web application to the internet, and allowing a forms authenticated user to access our report server somewhere within our intranet to view reports. I've browsed msdn and found that there are two approaches:

1. create a custom authentication extension for reporting services
2. create a restricted domain user that is allowed to access the report server

Going with approach 2 and assuming I'm using a ReportViewer control, in order to authenticate with the report server (using the one domain user created specifically for report server access), are we supposed to just provide an instance of an object implementing IReportServerCredential containing the domain user information to the Credentials property of the ReportViewer.ServerReport before accessing the report? Is this the correct way to implement approach 2? Also, if implementing approach 2 is so simple compared to approach 1, why would anyone choose to implement custom authentication extension if they don't need fine-grain access control on the report server level?

Thanks for any help and suggestions!If you use IReportServerCredential you essentially implement basic security since you need the user id and password. Instead, I'd recommend you use the identity of the asp.net process (application domain in IIS 6.0). You will need custom security if you need to propagate the user identity to the Report Server so RS can tell the users appart. If you don't need this then trusted account will be the recommended approach. You may find the following article useful.|||Thanks for the reply, Teo.

I read the article. So are you recommending that we run the ASP.Net process, hosting our custom application, under some domain account to grant it access to RS? Are there any security risks using this approach where we are granting the process (and all applications running under it in IIS 5.0, and at least the entire application pool itself in IIS 6.0) domain access? Or am I just misunderstanding this approach entirely? Thanks again for the help!|||Just to note that it doesn't have to be a domain account if the app and RS are on the same machine. Inherently, this approach is more secure because you don't need to deal with passwords.|||Hi Teo, thanks again for the reply.

The App and RS will be on separate machines. The App will be on a internet-facing webserver, whereas RS will be somewhere in an domain-access only machine. So I'm guessing I must run the App under a domain account.

How safe it is to have the domain account's user/pass stored in an encrypted .config file on the webserver machine, which would be read and passed (ie. basic) to RS for authentication on an domain-access only machine? And since I'm only passing these credentials between machines within my domain, isn't the passing of the credentials quite safe? And also this way, isn't it safer that the process running the application does not have more rights than it should at any time, while access to domain/RS is granted to the user only on a on-demand basis?

Sorry for asking so many questions.. I just want to understand all the pros and cons of each approach. Thanks a lot for the patience!|||

So I'm guessing I must run the App under a domain account.

Yes, you are right.

How safe it is to have the domain account's user/pass stored in an encrypted .config file on the webserver machine, which would be read and passed (ie. basic) to RS for authentication on an domain-access only machine?

As I mentioned, if you use IReportCredentials in ReportViewer you are essentially using Windows Basic security. The credentials will be passed base64-encoded between the app server and RS. But since this is on your internal LAN, it may not be a huge security risk for you. We followed this pattern with our applicaton for clients who don't have AD. The ReportViewer would read the credentials from a security service (stored in encrypted format), decrypt them and set them on the call.

|||Hi Teo,

Thanks a lot again for the reply.

As

I mentioned, if you use IReportCredentials in ReportViewer you are

essentially using Windows Basic security. The credentials will be

passed base64-encoded between the app server and RS.

Can I setup ReportServer to use SSL to even further secure this portion of the basic authentication within the LAN?
|||Sure, you can.|||Thanks, Teo.

Final question, can you tell me any security risks of running the asp.net under a domain account? Is there any possibility that that identity could be hijacked and maliciously used?|||None that I know of. With IIS 6.0 I recommend you set up a separate application pool. That way the domain identity will be scoped for the application only.|||Hi Teo,
You have answered all my questions. Thanks for all the replies you've given me on this thread. All your suggestions and pointers have been a great help. Thanks!!

Report server asking for credentials again and again (3 times)

I am trying to access reports using custom web application. This application will run under user who have permission to view the reports. When multiple users are accessing reports, if we try to open any report from web application, after some time (around 7-8 mins.) report server is popping up credentials window and if we provide credentials, it is again giving credentials pop up after 5 mins. and after retrying 3 times like this, reports throws error saying 'You are not authorized to view page'. Is there any time out period specified for reports?

As per my investigation, report server default timeout is '30' minutes. I have not changed any values in Report server config files(rsreportserver.config). Nowhere I found that after 5 mins. the credentials pop up should opened?

Any help in this regard, greatly appreciated.

This doesn't sound like a timeout related issue but a security problem. The credentials window will pop up when the server tells the browser that it doesn't have authorization, and the browser gives you three changes to enter the proper credentials. I'm not sure why this would work when the application starts and then start failing after a period of time. If you go directly to the report on the reportserver, do you have the same problem?

|||

For queries which takes less time, reports are running fine. But for long running queries, after 5 mins. around, it is prompting for credentials. This prompting will continue for 2-3 times and atlast page throws message 'You are not authorized to view this page'.

I checked in IIS application pool properties, under which reporting services runs. I found 'TimeSetting Period' under Health tab as 5 mins. Is this the one caused to prompt for credentials for every 5 mins?

Configuration: Sql 2005 Reporting Services, IIS 6.0, Windows 2003

|||

We could able to find the reason why this is happening. We have 2 web servers for Reporting and these 2 boxes runs under Load balancer with BIG-IP. There is timeout value set at TCP Profiler in VIP. Now this has been changed and every thing is running fine.

Report Server and Report Manager on different machines

It is possible to configure a system of servers such that
the Report Manager can be running on a separate machine
than the Report Server?
We are concerned about the security issues of exposing a
server with the Front Page Server Extensions installed on
it, because it will reside outside of our corporate
firewall. As an alternative, we are hoping we can host
the Web Server/IIS box outside the firewall, and have
this machine run the Report Manager, while another box
inside the firewall runs the Report Server (which,
incidentally, will also be a separate box than the data
server).
Whether the security concerns of FPSE are real or
perceived, our clients might not like them. So, is the
type of configuration described above at all possible?
If not, please explain why. If it is possible, please
explain how.
Thanks in advance!Front Page Server extensions are not necessary for Report Manager. Just to
make sure I checked one of my servers (Windows 2003) and the default website
which has Report Manager does not have FP server extension.

FPSE are a requirement for VisualStudio.NET installation,
which are required for Report Designer, right?

have to have IIS.
You've gotten a misconception from somewhere that this is required.

that in order to deploy a report from the report designer
to the report server, FPSE were required.
I'm glad to hear that this is not the case. I'll check
out our servers again and try to verify this.
Thanks.

regular ASP.Net development. It is common to have FPSE for that. However,
with RS you are not deploying webpages. What you are doing is using
webservices to deploy the RDL. If you look on the server you will see that
no files are even showing up there when you deploy. That is because the RDL
is being stored in the database, not in the file system.
